In terms of FDAC, as we discussed, there was recently an announcement that the Family Drug and Alcohol Court (“FDAC”) National Unit is to close as of September.

To understand what FDAC is/does, there is a useful article in the Guardian:

https://amp.theguardian.com/society/2018/jul/24/courts-addicted-parents-funds-family-drug-and-alcohol-court-children-care?__twitter_impression=true

Our interest was piqued by recent articles by the retiring President, Sir James Munby, and the founder of FDAC, Mr Nicolas Crichton. Coincidentally, and around the same time, we attending an evening hosted by Sir Munby and the charity Pause. A combination of these two things has highlighted not only the value that FDAC but the almost immediate consequences to children’s lives if it is allowed to fail.

We were at the House of Lords a few weeks ago at a meeting with cross party Peers, cross party MPs, Nicholas Crichton and Lord Woolf to discuss how to bridge what is an immediate funding gap.

We have been doing all we can drum up support for the cause which has included articles in The Times (https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/law-firm-steps-in-to-help-save-family-drug-and-alcohol-court-mtk6jrtxd?shareToken=557827bf64ee18c92ba69ebb8ff7484a) and (https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/vital-work-of-family-drug-and-alcohol-court-needs-donations-fcxlczvvz?shareToken=5c6ebd8853634dd07fc34d69235561d8)   and Law Society Gazette respectively(https://www.lawgazette.co.uk/news/manchester-firm-gives-12k-to-save-pioneering-drug-court/5066790.article). And (https://www.lawgazette.co.uk/practice/more-law-firm-donations-needed-to-save-pioneering-drug-court-scheme/5066833.article?utm_source=dispatch&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=%20GAZ141016)

We decided that the best way that we, and firm’s/chambers like ours can help, is to pledge financial support. We have been told that the national unit needs a minimum of £250k per annum to survive. We have therefore pledged £12.5k (I,e 1/20th of the costs) per year for 3 years in the hope that others will do likewise and that during that 3 year period, FDAC will become self-sufficient.

Even if we raise half the amount we hope the government will match fund as they are so ashamed that even the lawyers will put their hands in their pockets!

We are delighted to say that we have already raised £62,500 a year for three years. We should be getting another next week which will take it to £75,000 a year for three years. We need more!

It would be great if you could spread the word!!!
